It was built on the orders of the successor of Cheraman Perumal, the Chera King of modern-day Kerala, by Malik Deenar, a Persian of the Islamic prophet Muhammad. The original structure was constructed sometime after the de Algabaria attack in 1504 (i.e., between the mid-16th and early 17th centuries). In 1984, modern corridors and halls were erected.
